What HRV actually measures
Your heart doesn't beat like a metronome. Even at a steady rate, the gap between beats varies slightly from one to the next — a little faster on the inhale, a little slower on the exhale. That variation is heart rate variability. Counterintuitively, more variability is usually a good sign: it means your autonomic nervous system is flexible and responsive rather than stuck.
Why people track it
HRV is one of the clearest available windows into the balance between your "fight or flight" (sympathetic) and "rest and digest" (parasympathetic) systems. Athletes use it to gauge recovery; many people use it as a daily readiness signal. A dip can flag stress, poor sleep, illness, or overtraining before you consciously feel it.
What actually improves it
There's no shortcut, but a handful of things genuinely help:
- Slow-paced breathing. Breathing at around six breaths per minute directly and dramatically increases HRV in the moment, and regular practice is associated with improvements over time. This is the most direct lever you have.
- Sleep. Consistent, sufficient sleep is foundational. Nothing else compensates for chronic sleep debt.
- Exercise. Regular aerobic activity raises HRV over months, though a hard session can temporarily lower it while you recover — which is the point of tracking.
- Managing stress and alcohol. Both reliably suppress HRV. Alcohol in the evening is one of the most common reasons for a poor morning reading.
How to measure it
You need a sensor — a chest strap is most accurate, but wrist wearables and rings give useful trends. What matters is not the absolute number (which varies hugely between people) but your trend over time, measured consistently, ideally first thing in the morning.
A realistic expectation
HRV is noisy day to day. Don't over-read a single reading. Look at the weekly and monthly trend, and treat breathing practice and sleep as the two levers most within your control.
